Lira University recently conducted a significant corporate governance induction training for its third Board Members on August 6, 2024. The training, facilitated by Foundation Leads Limited (FLL), underscored the university’s commitment to enhancing transparency, accountability, and integrity within its governance structures. This event marked a crucial step in Lira University’s journey towards effective and ethical leadership, as it equipped council members with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of university governance in today’s educational landscape. The training program covered a wide range of topics, including understanding governance structures, financial management, strategic planning, risk management, and ethical leadership. Participants engaged in workshops, discussions, and interactive sessions aimed at fostering collaboration among council members. The presence of esteemed guest speakers and facilitators with extensive experience in governance and higher education enriched the learning experience, providing practical tools and strategies for council members to implement in their roles.
During the induction training, the Chairperson of Lira University’s 3rd Council, Mr. David Geoffrey Opio Okello, emphasized the importance of embracing team spirit with accountability, transparency, and integrity in service delivery. He stressed that without effective leadership and good governance at all levels in the university, it is virtually impossible to achieve and sustain effective administration, vision, quality, and first-rate services. Opio Okello urged council members and technical staff to adopt best practices for the university to grow, attract partners, and consult at all times to avoid making unlawful decisions.
The training also highlighted the increasing complexities and requirements arising from the constant change in society, coupled with the push for higher levels of productivity. These factors necessitate effective and ethical leadership and value addition to the university. The Facilitators emphasized that council members must join hands to spur development in this young university and account for their leadership period. He cautioned members and staff of the university to ensure effective time management, noting that “time lost will never be recovered” and that “time is a huge and important resource.”
The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, who represented the Vice Chancellor, noted that the technical team was ready and willing to work amicably with the Council members to achieve the vision and objectives of the university. He assured participants that Management will always ensure effective documentation of all Council activities and share information with relevant stakeholders in time, while also seeking development partners locally and internationally.
The training covered key topics such as the roles and functions of the university, strategic planning and its benefits, corporate governance issues, ethical principles in leadership, risk management, effective council meetings, conflict management, consensus building and voting procedures, stakeholder management and communication, and conflict resolution.
Participants expressed appreciation for the training, acknowledging its importance in equipping them with valuable knowledge and skills to enhance their governance practices. Many highlighted the significance of fostering a culture of transparency and accountability within the university, recognizing their critical role in shaping Lira University’s future.
Moving forward, Lira University plans to implement strategies that encourage greater stakeholder engagement, including regular communication with students, faculty, and the community to gather feedback and ensure that their voices are heard in the decision-making processes. The university is also committed to providing continuous professional development opportunities for its council members, ensuring that they remain informed about best practices in governance and can adapt to the evolving landscape of higher education.
